FEATURE PAPER

Profiling College Students Based on Time-Use: Relationship With Personal, Situational, and Academic Outcome Variables

This paper was presented by Sarath Nonis, Melodie Philhours, and Gail Hudson of Arkansas State University at the 2005 Association of Collegiate Marketing Educators (ACME) in Dallas, Texas. These three were the recipients of the 2005 McGraw-Hill/Irwin Distinguished Paper Award.

ABSTRACT
Students today lead very busy lives and spend too little time studying, less than is recommended or learning. Surprisingly, when the research is reviewed as to the impact of decreased study time on academic performance, the results are mixed. This study examines a wider variety of activities to which students devote their time and clusters students into two distinct profiles. Personal, situational variables and academic performance are different for each group. Results provide some explanation as to why previous study results have been mixed. Implications are also discussed.

TIP OF THE WEEK

Board of Advisors

Although not necessarily a legal requirement, the establishment of a board of advisors for a new organization is an outstanding resource for navigating the new business during its formation and early life. A board of advisors is substantially different from a board of directors. A business that chooses to form a corporation must have a board of directors. These are individuals who have a fiduciary responsibility to the shareholders of the organization. In small corporations, the shareholders and board of directors are often the same individuals. In contrast, a board of advisors may be formed at the discretion of the founders (regardless of the legal form chosen) and are individuals outside the small business who advise the firm.

This type of board should be composed of business people who have both insight and experience with which to advise the small business founders. While the size of the board is a matter of choice, as a practical matter it is better to have a few, well-placed individuals who are motivated to help the firm through the start-up process rather than a large number as a means of false showmanship. Most new businesses have a set of basic needs, thus individuals should be selected who have experience navigating the following:

  • Licensing requirements for your type of industry in your locality (if such licensing is relatively complex/difficult)
  • Regulations for your specific industry
  • New start-up experience and success
  • Financial/accounting background with new start-ups
  • Human resources experience, especially establishing criteria

This board can formally meet on whatever schedule seems appropriate (three times a year is a good standard); however, the value of the individuals is the ability to contact them to resolve problems as issues arise without the formality of a meeting. In keeping with the efficient operation of a new business, traditionally the board size should be maintained at fewer than five individuals. Compensation is usually not much of an issue for these individuals. Some will be in a professional capacity working with the firm, while most get involved with start-ups because of their interest in seeing a business flourish. As the firm develops, formality and compensation can be considered.
