FEATURE PAPER

Women-Owned Firms and Growth

The following paper was presented at the 2006 USASBE/SBI Conference held in Tucson, Arizona. It was written by Susan Coleman, of the University of Hartford.

Abstract

This study uses data from the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Small Business Finances to compare women-owned growth firms to women-owned non-growth firms. In addition, women-owned growth firms were compared to a sample of men-owned growth firms to determine if the same factors contribute to growth in both. Results reveal that human capital in the form of prior business experience and financial capital in the form of access to debt capital were predictors of growth for both women- and men-owned firms.

Introduction

The objective of this research has been to compare the performance of women-owned growth and non-growth firms to determine which factors are associated with growth. As a further step, a sample of men-owned growth firms were compared to men-owned non-growth firms to see if the same factors that contribute to growth in women-owned firms also contribute to growth in menowned firms. These results reveal that growth-oriented firms are more likely to have loans. This finding is consistent with prior research which seems to suggest that access to capital is one of the conditions required for growth. In terms of human capital, the owners of growth firms had significantly more years of prior business experience than the owners of non-growth firms. This is also consistent with prior research that attests to the relationship between the entrepreneur’s level of human capital and firm performance.

TIP OF THE WEEK

Resources for Women Entrepreneurs

Today, the growth in the number of female entrepreneurs is over twice the rate for men. And the growth of minority female entrepreneurs is even higher. According to the National Foundation for Women Business Owners, "there are an estimated 10.6 million privately-held firms in the country." These firms employ 19.1 million people and generate sales of $2.46 trillion. More than 1 million minority-women-owned businesses produce more than $180 billion in sales. We have included a few helpful organizations and websites that will provide training, resources, assistance, and possibly even help in securing funding. Most of these organizations have local chapters and centers to help you directly in your own community. Finding other women dreaming the same dream and possibly even a few mentors may be an incredible boost to your business.
